In-Situ Ozone Remediation of PCB/ Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils | Franklinville, New Jersey

This former heating oil distribution center in Franklinville, New Jersey had been utilized as a waste oil/ hazardous waste storage facility. Contaminants of concern include Polychlorinated Byphenyls and petroleum based hydrocarbons.

Pre- remedial laboratory analytical data indicated that a TPH mass of 65,000 lbs. would need to be remediated, in addition to the PCBs which are entrained in the petroleum hydrocarbons. BLUE designed and installed an ozone and oxygen in-situ remediation system and remedial layout for the site, constructed the system, completed subsurface installation, and has been responsible for system testing, operation and optimization activities. Soil and groundwater sampling have been completed through-out the project by the USEPA and the property owner’s consultant.

Current laboratory analytical data indicates 84% reduction in TPH mass and 91% reduction in PCB mass.

See What’s New for more detail on the PCB Permitting and Remediation at this site.

In Situ Ozone Remediation of Adsorbed PAH Compounds in Soils | New York

BLUE was contracted to implement an ozone injection remedy to mitigate vadose zone adsorbed phase PAH impacts at a former fuel oil distribution terminal.

The site, a 20,000 square-foot area surrounding the dispenser loading rack, consisted of both contaminated fill and contaminated native soils. Exceedances of the NYSDEC TAGM 4046 standards for benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(b)pyrene) benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene and Chrysene had been detected. The total PAH mass was required to be reduced by 90% in order to meet project goals.

Remediation was completed in 60 days. Post remedial sampling results indicated no remaining PAH mass above the method detection limit – effectively a 100% reduction in PAH mass in vadose zone soils.

In Situ Ozone Remediation of Chlorinated Solvents | Elmwood Park, New Jersey

BLUE is currently remediating a 50,000 SQ FT manufacturing facility in operation since the 1940s. Soils were heavily contaminated with chlorinated solvents (Tetrachloroethene (PCE) and Trichloroethane (TCE)) Groundwater contaminants included PCE, TCE and daughter products (Dichloroethene (DCE) and Vinyl Chloride (VC)). The objective of the project was the reduction of adsorbed phase chlorinated hydrocarbons and metals in the soils beneath the building, waste storage areas, and down-gradient stream sediments to below NJDEP non-residential direct contact standards and the reduction of dissolved phase chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations to NJDEP GWQS Class II criteria.

Remedial actions included excavation of contaminated storm-water ditch sediments and drum storage area soils, design, installation and operation of a RemedO3Zone™ in-situ remediation system.  The most current sampling results indicated a 94% reduction in groundwater VOCs from 33.86 lbs. to 2.34 lbs. and a reduction of 7,162 lbs. in soils. Remediation is ongoing.

In Situ Ozone Remediation of Gasoline and TPH | Various, New Jersey/Pennsylvania/Rhode Island/New Hampshire/New York/Florida

The prior owner of a large tract of land, located in a lakefront development area, had liability under NYS Navigation Law to remediate soil and groundwater affected by petroleum hydrocarbons. Another consulting firm was attempting remediation by various methods. To facilitate sale of the property, BLUE was contracted to implement an ozone injection remedy at this site.

An existing 380-foot-long horizontal well was utilized to inject ozone and compressed air into the area of concern. Saturated and unsaturated soils, and contaminated groundwater, were exposed to ozone injection and total phase extraction was operated simultaneously. The ozone injection system was operated for seven months. Sampling at completion of this seven month period indicated a 97% reduction of VOC concentrations in soil, a 64% reduction of VOC concentrations in groundwater, and reductions of MTBE in soil and groundwater of 90% and 45%, respectively. The client was able to work with the property owner and developer to move the project into the redevelopment phase after completion of the ozone remedial action.

In addition to the above case summary, BLUE has remediated and is currently conducting remediation at service stations throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York and Florida. As a service provider for several gasoline distribution companies, BLUE RemedO3Zone™ solutions have been utilized to remediate various levels of petroleum releases and achieved site closure.

In-Situ Ozone Remediation of Home Heating Oil Release | Various, New Jersey

BLUE has been contracted by Resource Control Consultants, LLC (RCC) to provide remediation for petroleum hydrocarbon constituents released from numerous subsurface home heating oil tanks. Released hydrocarbons had migrated to beneath the occupied residential structure, making complete remediation an elusive goal in most cases.

Further complicating the success of the remedial effort were the strict New Jersey Pinelands cleanup standards for several site locations. BLUE and RCC achieved groundwater and soil cleanup goals without posing risk or disturbance to the residents. All cases have received regulatory site closure.
